Thursday 10.28 Electronic Cinema w/Myrmyr + Sue-C

Ok busted, I didn’t get around to posting two shows before they happened.  But, it turned out to be a beautiful evening of sounds + images, so I’ll attempt a recap.   Despite being horribly sick and barely coherent, the myrmyr live score to Sue-C‘s video “Untitled 26″ turned out really well!  We were inspired by the video to perform a score more ‘dark’ & more textural than regular myrmyr.  I was really impressed by Kadet Kuhne‘s delicate & thoughtful scores of a Paul Clipson & 2 Maia Cybelle Carpenter films, that really showed off her strength in sound design work.  ATA was packed and the audience had some very thoughtful questions & discussions after each set.  Thanks to VOLUME productions & the Southern Exposure: Alternative Exposure grant program for curating & support!

Myrmyr Turrell @ the De Young Museum

Featuring acoustic performances by Myrmyr (violin, cello, voice, objects)

Green Sound (part of festival) moves to the de Young for this special performance part of “Cultural Encounters: Friday Nights at the de Young”.

Nestled inside a grass-covered hill in de Young’s Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden is world-renowned artist James Turell’s installation “Three Gems”.

This “skyspace,” is a subterranean installation that features a view of the sky altered by L.E.D. lighting effects, and highlights changing light and weather conditions outside.

During this event, contemporary experimental music duo Myrmyr (cello, violin, objects, voice) will create acoustic compositions in and around “Three Gems”, using no electrical power and only the resonance created by the sculpture to amplify and reflect Turrell’s work.

Note: This special performance takes place in the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden – Entrance off the de Young café. “Three Gems” entrance is on the far right side of the garden (facing out from the de Young café).

This is a FREE EVENT but please RSVP to confirm your attendance

Unweathered Embers transforms the acoustic sounds of 19 Bay Area vocalists and musicians in unique orchestral & surround-sound arrangements.  The piece is composed especially for the festival’s Green Sound theme to be all-acoustic and use no electricity, while taking advantage of the stellar acoustics of the space. Clusters of performers surround audiences in different areas and nooks, some even hidden from view, creating a reverberant other-worldly sound that will change as the audience members move through the space.

Thursday 3.11.10 @ the BlueSix, SF

An evening of intimate duos at the Bluesix Acoustic Room

3043 24th St @ Treat St in the Mission, SF MAP

South China [from Maine!] meld experimental rock and classical music, producing a sound that feels sparse and improvised, evoking a slightly dark and dream-like state. They draw listeners into their intimate world of Maine winters, bittersweet moments, subtle humor, and the bizarre dream imagery.

EFFT will perform in duo form, their bittersweet songs inspired by a potent poeticism, ’90s shoegaze riffs, and experimental penchants. They will be joined by myrmyr on violin & cello for one song!

MYRMYR transforms violin, cello, voices, and other instruments with electronics to create modern Baltic-folklore-inspired chamber songs. They will be debuting one never-before-heard song,  perform a tune from their upcoming 2nd album, and also will be joined by EFFT for one song!
